TECH/talks: Agentic AI

We have entered a new era of AI, the era where one AI can not just answer all your questions, but also reason solutions and solve problems. This change has triggered a shift from passive AI to active agents working next to real employees, thanks to agentic AI.

What are agents?
If you think about traditional AI, you can think of it like a customer chat bot. You ask it a question and you receive an answer. Agentic AI, or agents, refers to systems that don’t just respond passively, but actively take initiative, make reasoned decisions and pursue goals. Unlike traditional AI, agents can plan, act and adapt based on the problem given, more like an actual customer service employee.

The key difference lies in the ability to act independently. When you tell an agentic AI system to “add a password reset feature to our app,” it doesn’t just return code snippets. Instead, it might analyze the existing codebase, implement the backend logic, create database migrations, add frontend components, write unit tests, update the API documentation, and even create a pull request.

These systems combine three critical capabilities. First, they can plan by breaking down complex goals into actionable steps. Second, they can use tools like accessing databases, running code, calling APIs, and even coordinating with other AI systems. Third, they can adapt based on what they learn, adjusting their approach when they hit obstacles or discover new information.

Why does this matter?
Agentic AI is driving a shift that reaches well beyond routine automation, enabling the users to abilities that once demanded deep expertise or entire dedicated teams.
Imagine a small business owner needing market research. Instead of spending weeks learning how to do it or hiring costly consultants, an AI agent can now deliver a full analysis in hours, putting enterprise-level tools within anyone’s reach. It’s more than cost savings; it levels the playing field.

The efficiency gains are just as striking. Work that once took days now takes hours, and tasks that require multiple people or systems can be handled by a single agent. Organizations can scale instantly without the usual bottlenecks of hiring or training, with AI that operates nonstop and manages huge parallel workloads.

Most importantly, agentic AI lets humans focus on what we excel at: creative problem-solving, strategic thinking, and meaningful relationships. With repetitive analysis and routine tasks handled by agents, we’re free to innovate, interpret, and make better decisions.

Overcoming the challenges
This shift also introduces significant risks. Autonomous systems can still make mistakes, and those errors can compound quickly, so we need strong validation, clear limits on what agents can do, and reliable ways to monitor their actions. Security is equally important, AI agents that can run code, access data, or trigger transactions must be protected with strict permissions, safeguards, and audit trails.
Human oversight remains essential. These systems should enhance, not replace, human judgment. Clear protocols are needed for when an agent should pause, seek input, or hand decisions back to people.
The best path forward is careful, phased adoption. Start with low-risk, high-value tasks, add human review around sensitive actions, and invest time in understanding how these systems operate. Used thoughtfully, agentic AI becomes a partner that extends human capability rather than a substitute for it.

The age of agentic AI is just beginning. Those who learn to work effectively with these digital collaborators will have a significant advantage in the years ahead. The question isn’t whether to embrace this technology, but how to do so thoughtfully and effectively.
